Chilies/chili peppers are believed to be originated in the Tropical Americas. The widely cultivated chilies belong to the genus Capsicum of the family Solanaceae. India is the largest producer of red chilies in the world and interestingly one of the largest consumers too. Red chilies constitute nearly 22% of spices export from India, more than 50% of which comes from the state of Andhra Pradesh.

CHILI FACTS

Christopher Columbus discovered this pungent spice from Chile during his American expeditions and called it “Chile pepper”, hence the name. He introduced chilies to the world.
Only mammals can feel the pungency of capsaicin, the alkaloid present in the chilies. Birds and other animals cannot feel the heat of chili pepper.
The intensity of heat of chili peppers is expressed in Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
Portuguese traveler Vasco-da-Gama, brought chilies to the Indian shores in 1498.

Interestingly, chilies have thrice the amount of vitamin C in them than citrus fruits. They are also excellent sources of vitamins A, B, and E, and minerals like Molybdenum, Manganese, Folate, Potassium and Copper.
